It is very common to stumble upon a tiny restaurant tucked away in the narrow streets of Wan Chai.
Pici, however, is an exception. Having left the house at 11:30am, my family were shocked to be greeted with a winding line of people, eager to be seated. To our disappointment, the table of four just before us managed to snatch away our seats. Next time, we decided to arrive for an early dinner at 5:30pm and we just managed to secure the last free table. Pici is astoundingly popular, especially since it has been operating for such a short time.
With an open front and semi-alfresco seating, Pici is naturally lit by the warm sunlight during the afternoon. During the evening, the neutral tones and delicate wall art is illuminated by the bright rustic lamps inside.
The menu is simple, but with minor twists and eccentricities. With homemade pastas in a variety of shapes, sizes and textures, there are multiple surprises and delights in each dish that Chef Andrea Viglione crafts for us to enjoy.
Pici is part of the Pirata Group, which I wrote up about in my blog entry Pirata. Thus many of the foods are similar e.g. the Meatballs, the Tiramisu and the Raspberry Pana Cotta.
Homemade Meatballs- I've always been a fan of meatballs, but these are absolutely incredible. Coated in a rich tomato sauce with a generous portion of basil sprinkled on the top, just the sight of them already causes uncontrollable salivation. Once placed in the mouth, the meatball is warm and the tomato flavor blatant. One bite in and the meaty flavors and herbs explode into your mouth. If you are looking for a perfect homey meatball, this is the one.
Orecchiette (Italian sausage, spicy n'duka, cherry tomato)
Spicy, creamy, fragrant. A beautiful combination of textures and flavors, but nothing too overpowering. My favorite dish of the night.
Classic Lasagna (Beef ragu, butter, sage)
Warm, homey and filling. The cheese, beef and tomato melts in your mouth with every bite. Very large portion and different, but appetising approach to the classic lasagna.
Pappardelle (8 hours slow cooked beef cheek ragu, onion, carrot, celery)
Overall enjoyable, but I was a bit let down by how tough and small the pieces of beef were. There was a nice taste of the vegetables and the beef together, but the flavors did not come out as strongly as I anticipated.
Taglioni (Shallot, white truffle paste, freshly shaved black truffle)
Dominant truffle flavor with a silkiness and richness. Absolutely delightful and beautifully presented. No room for complaining.
Raspberry Pana Cotta (Left)- Creamy and fruity at once. Cool and sweet and delectable. Perfect portion.
Tiramisu (Right)- A wonderful way to end the meal. Light and sweet to satisfy all cravings.
