I actually had noticed the sign "The Kitchen" from afar on the Chicago River Architecture Boat Cruise. After frantically researching the restaurant, I found high ratings, positive reviews and enticing photos; naturally we were compelled to take a look. From the minute I walked in, I was welcomed with a spacious setting with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the avant-garde river and Chicago architecture. The furniture was simple but comforting and it really made me feel at ease. The prompt seating and warm greetings of our server immediately set a good impression of "The Kitchen" . Also, the waiter informed us that the ingredients were all fresh, natural and organic, which is a great health and environmental benefit. Thankfully, the food came promptly. Already rather full from breakfast, I decided to stick with a healthy and light 'Kale and Farro Salad' option. The portion, however, looked abominable. Upon the first bite, I was definitely thrilled. The bold cilantro vinaigrette dressing made my tastebuds tingle with sour and sweet and it was one of the freshest salads I had tasted. As I tackled my way through the green vegetables, my body was telling me I couldn't handle it, but my mind wanted more of the kale and farro. To me, the portion size was a bit too large, especially for a salad.
My friend was more adventurous and went for the Salmon Burger. He said that the salmon was seared perfectly. Crispy on the outside and tender and warm on the inside, but he had a little complaint that it was a tad bit too salty. The whole burger went together perfectly, though and the fries were for sure cooked just right.
