If you are looking for authentic, yet filling, Japanese food, try Shouzen. Hiding within the busy district of Sheung Wan, this has become one of my favorite Japanese restaurants. Atmosphere is peaceful and relaxing, like a traditional Japanese restaurant. The interior is Zenic with simple lines and color. Tables are spacious, ready for the beautifully laden 30cm tray carrying our individual food order. Service is efficient. The food came quickly. What shocked us was the abundance of food served. The sets were relatively large compared to other Japanese restaurants in HK. The colorful representation of the food made the meal very appealing. Each set came with four appetisers: steamed egg, salad, fried fish and pickles, as well as a miso soup. The salad was fresh, and the dressing super tasty (rich miso dressing). The crunchy fish had a kick of spice. The steamed egg was thick, smooth, slippery and yummy. My favourite appetiser was the miso soup, perfectly flavoured (not too thick or thin) with tofus that melted in my mouth. I ordered the beef udon set, which scared me when it was served because I rarely see such big bowls of noodles. In the bowl were a large chunk of sliced beef and a wide variety of vegetables, such as carrots, lettuce, asparagus, mushrooms and others. I wish there were more udon noodles though! The taste was heavenly with an aromatic blend of textures and flavour in one gigantic bowl. On one hand was the juicy beef, and the other, chewy mushrooms. The set concluded with dessert (macaroon) and tea/coffee. Though it was a huge set, I didn't feel uncomfortably full, but instead, felt happily satisfied. Everyone in my family was extremely contented because their food was so delectable as well. The sashimi was so fresh and in big sizes, the tempura crunchy, and the tonkatsu pork cutlet addicting. The waiters were thoughtful and attentive, always on the lookout for a hand in the air. The price was very reasonable considering the portion served, ranging from $180-$300. I don't think the restaurant could have operated any better. I am sure our next visit is just around the corner. Shouzen: 2851 9883
