My family and I ventured into Soundwill Plaza II Midtown on a Saturday lunch. As we walked out of the elevator, we were rather surprised at the line of people waiting to enter the restaurant, as it was only 11:20 in the morning! I think the line at such an early hour says much about the popularity of the restaurant. We were excited to try out the food!

This family type restaurant has a simple, clean line, soft color, but comfortable decor, that is very representative of a Japanese restaurant.  This restaurant would not feel misplaced even in Mitsukoshi Tokyo, Japan with its Japanese-styled blinds and wood color furniture. In fact, Ootaya has more than 300 outlets in Japan and 80 outlets in 7 countries. The large glass windows welcome in the sunlight and brighten up the room effortlessly.

Pork and Kimchi with Cold Udon Set
The simple comfort food of Ootaya complements the interior design of the restaurant. They offer set-meal style menus (teishoku). I ordered a Kimchi Pork with Rice and Cold Udon set which came in big portions and was rather filling. The dish blended spicy, salty, and sweet flavors together nicely, and made the dish very palatable. The cold udon noodles with sauce, however, tasted a bit bland. Thankfully, like most Japanese food, it was not at all greasy.  Looking at the portion served and the cost of the set, it was definitely good value ($75-175)

My family enjoyed their dishes very much as well. Their complaints were the same: the noodle with sauce being a bit bland.

Overall it was an enjoyable meal. The food was appetizing and of good value, and environment clean and relaxing. The waiters were also polite and helpful. We would definitely come back!
Make sure to book before you visit as the waiting line could be long. They only take reservation for 1/3 of the restaurant so call early. Else go early at 11:30am, the opening time.
