The notable Sham Shui Po restaurant is most notable for its free and cheap rice boxes.  During 2011, the restaurant began to receive attention when the owner, Ming, began working with a charity organization who provided free lunchboxes to the needy on a monthly basis. Eventually, the restaurant started giving out at least 100 free meals a week and pricing its rice sets at an affordable price of $22, which has remained the same for years.

During March 2016, the restaurant reportedly shut down due to skyrocketing rents. However this did not not stop the respectable owner, Ming, from pursuing his passion to help the needy. The owner of a property opposite the restaurant leased to him to continue to operate his charitable service, in a much larger and newer setting.  Targeting homeless people, the new store will be in the form of a social enterprise operating as a charitable canteen, the free meals will still be provided. This is just another beginning for the North River Roast Meat Restaurant.

Not only that, but 1600 volunteers, including high school are provided with the opportunity to help out at the restaurant and give back to the community.

The effort and persistence of Owner Ming is respectable and something I look up to. The dedication he puts into helping his community, despite his loss in profit is truly admirable.
