Quality Hotpot and Sukiyaki

Nabe-Dokoro Sessyu is an artistically tasteful and modern Japanese eatery, specialising in hotpot and sukiyaki. Located in the avant-garde Cubus building in Causeway Bay, the restaurant is a popular destination for large gatherings with traditional Japanese private seating rooms, creating a relaxing and delightful atmosphere for feasting on thin slices of tender beef as the fragant soup bubbles on the tabletop.

I chose the Hot Pet Set with Seaweed Soup Base with USA Beef Rib Eye 80g ($260). The set included a Small Dish, Salad, Pickles, Miso-Soup, Dessert and Coffee or Tea.

The appetisers and small dishes were light and refreshing palate cleaners. The pumpkin was smooth, sweet and creamy. The spinach was cool, fresh and had a delightful sesame-type dressing that was very enjoyable. My favourite was the tender and soft chunks of stewed beef, which had a rich sweet beefy flavour.

Then arrived the sauces (traditional Japanese ponzu and sesame), pickled vegetables and seasoning. The ponzu sauce was light in flavour but had a pleasantly surprising acidic citrus undertone to it, enhancing the flavour sensation. The sesame sauce was also quite light, but very tasty. The seawood soup depicted on the right wafted with aromas of saltiness and sweetness upon boiling. However upon tasting the soup, I felt that seaweed flavor was dominated by blandness of the water and there really was not much as a strong aroma as expected.
