"The dream has always been to open a place that is more than just a restaurant” says Will Meyrick, who is the brainchild behind Bali’s success story Sarong restaurant. “An environment where people can feel comfortable to eat, try their hand at cooking or just lounge in a bar. Basically, not needing to leave the space until home time, whatever that time is. Mama San is for anyone who appreciates to lounge in style and eat quality food without it being too expensive." Meyrick, Will. "Mama San Hong Kong | Restaurant & Bar." Mama San Hong Kong | Restaurant & Bar. Will Meyrick, 2014. Web. 02 Feb. 2017. With branches in both Malaysia and Indonesia, Chef Will Meyrick has brought these authentic classic Indonesian flavours in the midst of Hong Kong, accompanied by the abstract interior design, which calls for a dining experience like no other. Hidden deep inside the hustle and bustle of Lan Kwai Fung, Mama San itself with a balcony overlooking the busy street scene of Central. Inside the restaurant itself, the design is very soothing. There are elements of traditional Balinese architecture teamed up with the traditional Western low level lights. It is truly a relaxing place to dine in. What is particularly memorable is the hand-painted artwork of an Asian lady in the middle of the dining hall, which provides that pop of colour. We visited during a Saturday lunch and given the option of the lunch set and a la carte. There were also additional desserts and drinks to add at a cost. The menu was easy to read, to-the-point and is executed well. Each Set Lunch comes with an appetiser and main at a relatively affordable price for the portion size. Additionally, there are both elements of Indonesian classics and modern fusion dishes in jus the right proportions. The Iced Tea is definitely worth trying. Although extremely sweet, it is satisfying and perfect for a hot humid typical Hong Kong summer day. The aromatic flavor of the Chai is unexpected but soothing. Overall, one of my favorite Ice Teas I've ever tried.
However the beef was delicious. Texture, flavour and sensation were all there. From the tenderness of the beef, to the texture of the bean paste, it was a standout. I especially liked the fine balance between the Asian herbs and the black bean sauce flavours. Apart from chugging down the water to rid myself of the unexpected chilli seeds, it was very very enjoyable.
The service, although not super attentive, was warm and helpful, especially with the child menu recommendations. They really contributed to the soothing vibe of the restaurant.
